Endless Subjects

FOR ARTISTS, THE WORLD AROUND THEM PROVIDES A VARIETY OF SUBJECT MATTER. AS THE WORLD CHANGES, THE WORKS CHANGE, CREATING INNUMERABLE SUBJECTS FOR THE ARTISTS TO PORTRAY THROUGH THEIR LENS OF EXPERIENCE.

WITH SOME DRAWINGS BEING DONE OUTSIDE WITH HIS HANDMADE DRAWING BOARD AND SOME BEING BASED ON PHOTOGRAPHS HE HAS TAKEN, CODY ANDERSON AIMS TO REPRESENT HIS ENVIRONMENT. HAVING ALWAYS DRAWN INSPIRATION FROM HIS DIRECT SURROUNDINGS, CODY IS CONSCIOUS OF HIS POSITIONALITY AND RELATIONSHIP TO HAWAII, ESPECIALLY HAVING GROWN UP IN WYOMING AND THEN MOVING TO HAWAII IN 2017. HAVING NO PREVIOUS CONNECTIONS TO THE ISLAND, CODY ACKNOWLEDGES HIS ROLE AS A SOURCE OF REPRESENTATION OF THE ISLAND SHOWCASING THE BEAUTY OF THE ISLAND WHILE ALSO ILLUSTRATING THE REALITY OF THE CHALLENGES AND DIFFICULTIES OF LIVING IN A TOURIST-SATURATED LOCATION. IT IS THROUGH HIS DRAWINGS THAT HE FORCES HIMSELF AND VIEWERS TO BE AWARE OF THE CHALLENGES THAT LOCALS FACE.

IN THIS SERIES OF DRAWINGS, CODY FOCUSES ON THE SUBJECT OF THE HONOLULU RAIL TRANSIT, REFERRED TO AS THE RAIL; A 20- MILE-LONG RAIL SYSTEM THAT HAS BEEN IN CONSTRUCTION SINCE 2011 WITH THE GOAL OF CONNECTING WESTERN OʻAHU TO CENTRAL HONOLULU. AS MANY COMMUTE TO THEIR WORKPLACES IN THE URBAN CENTER, THE PROJECT WAS INTENDED TO ALLEVIATE THE HOUR TO HOUR AND A HALF SPENT IN TRAFFIC BETWEEN THE TWO ENDPOINTS. HOWEVER, DUE TO MULTIPLE PROBLEMS, THE PROJECT IS LESS THAN 50% COMPLETE, MAKING IT YEARS BEHIND SCHEDULE AND BILLIONS OF TAXPAYER DOLLARS OVER BUDGET. THE LONGEVITY OF THIS PROJECT MAKES IT AN ENDLESS SUBJECT, PERFECT FOR CODY TO OBSERVE AND RECORD. AS CONSTRUCTION OF THE RAIL PROGRESSES, THE DRAWINGS PRODUCED BY CODY OF THE RAIL DOCUMENT THE SHIFTS AND CHANGES OF THE PROJECT, NEVER DOCUMENTING THE SAME THING TWICE.
